Gernot er tilknyttet Leknes Affective Brain lab ved UiO og er opptatt av hvordan eksterne faktorer som medikamenter, mat og fysisk aktivitet kan påvirke hjernens funksjon. Ellers har han gjennom mange år fordypet seg i det autonome nervesystemet, og hjerterytmevariabilitet (heart rate variabililty/HRV) spesielt.
